How much can I earn by routing on the Bitcoin Lightning Network?

I hear some people are making good money on routing. Can I get into this game and what do I need to do? How much can I earn?

Yes, when you route money for other people you will earn SATs in return in the form of routing fees. This is a small amount of Bitcoin that is payed to you for providing liquidity for others.

The amount you earn from routing depends on multiple things:
  • The amount of liquidity you have on your node, both inbound and outbound.
  • The amount of transactions you route per a given time frame.
  • The amount of funds you route in total.
  • The fees you set per transaction.
  • The fees you set per size of transaction.

There is no easy way to predict the amount of SATs you can earn per month with your node, but here are some pointers based on experience of other node operators:
  • A small non-professional node operator with a total capacity of 10M SATs reported to route 40 transactions per month and earned a total of ~5K SATs.
  • A large operator with over 1BTC reported to route 300 transactions and earned ~60K SATs per month.
  • A well known operator with hundreds of BTC of total capacity reported to earn ~0.1 BTC per month.

Routing efficiently requires lots of attention and constant work on your channels to make sure they are balanced the right way.
